Division as inverse of multiplication, fair sharing concept
Elementary Foundations • K-5
Division is splitting a total into equal groups. When you share 12 cookies equally among 3 friends, each friend gets 4 cookies. That is division! Division is the inverse (opposite) of multiplication, just like subtraction is the inverse of addition.
Division answers two kinds of questions:
Fair Sharing (Partitive)
"12 cookies shared equally among 3 friends. How many does each friend get?"
Making Groups (Measurement)
"I have 12 cookies and want to put 4 in each bag. How many bags do I need?"
Both questions use the same numbers (12, 3, 4), just asked differently.
If you know a multiplication fact, you already know a division fact!
If you know:
Then you also know:
To solve a division problem, ask: "What times the divisor equals the dividend?"
Ask yourself: "5 times what equals 35?"
Think through the 5s table: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35. That is the 7th multiple.
So 35 ÷ 5 = 7.
Sometimes things do not divide evenly. If you share 14 stickers among 3 friends, each gets 4 stickers (3 x 4 = 12), but 2 stickers are left over. We call those leftovers the remainder.
| Rule | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Any number ÷ 1 = itself | 9 ÷ 1 = 9 | One group holds everything |
| Any number ÷ itself = 1 | 7 ÷ 7 = 1 | Each person gets exactly one |
| 0 ÷ any number = 0 | 0 ÷ 5 = 0 | Zero items means nobody gets any |
| You cannot divide by 0 | 6 ÷ 0 = undefined | You cannot split into zero groups |
Students sometimes mix up the dividend and divisor. In 12 ÷ 3, the 12 (dividend) is what you are splitting up, and the 3 (divisor) is how many groups you make (or the size of each group). The answer (4) is the quotient.
To check any division answer, multiply: quotient x divisor + remainder = dividend. For 14 ÷ 3 = 4 R 2: check 4 x 3 + 2 = 12 + 2 = 14. Correct!
1. 20 ÷ 4 = ?
Think: 4 x ? = 20. Since 4 x 5 = 20, the answer is 5.
2. 36 ÷ 6 = ?
Think: 6 x ? = 36. Since 6 x 6 = 36, the answer is 6.
3. 17 ÷ 5 = ? (include the remainder)
5 x 3 = 15 (fits), 5 x 4 = 20 (too big). So the quotient is 3, and the remainder is 17 - 15 = 2. Answer: 3 remainder 2. Check: 3 x 5 + 2 = 17.
4. 48 students need to form teams of 8. How many teams?
48 ÷ 8 = 6 teams. Check: 6 x 8 = 48.
5. Write the fact family for 7, 8, and 56.
7 x 8 = 56
8 x 7 = 56
56 ÷ 7 = 8
56 ÷ 8 = 7
Summary: Division splits a total into equal groups. It is the inverse of multiplication -- if you know your times tables, you can divide! When items do not split evenly, there is a remainder. Always check division by multiplying back.
